Gnome There is a controversy in the Linux world. It doesn't have to do with Microsoft, or anything overtly technical. It may seem, to the outsider, the open source equivalent of the question, "Boxers or briefs?" But it's much more serious than that. More here.

and uses/promotes wlan drivers with a non-free hal (e.g. madwifi)

Just to butt in the conversation: they are actually working on a completely free hal, and it is included in the recent rc versions of the kernel. It is still very much under development but when it is finished it'll beat any of those older implementations.

You should have quoted/read the whole sentence:

"The Linux developers has accepted non-free driver like NVidia and uses/promotes wlan drivers with a non-free hal (e.g. madwifi) while the OpenBSD guys produces a real free driver (e.g. real free atheros driver)."

It was OpenBSD who created the free hal. The "Linux guys" ignored it for a long time and now finally port it over to Linux. The driving force for this driver/hal comes from OpenBSD while the "Linux guy" where quite happy with their madwifi driver + non-free hal for a long time.
