SOny would like you to believe that, and tests founded by Sony indeed support that claim (sounds familiar?). But not independent ones - definatelly AAC or Vorbis are superior in this case. (sorry, would have to browse through hydrogenaudio tests archive, would be hard on mobile...)

About that though, aside from the DRM, ATRAC is acoustically superior to MP3, WMA, OGG. Sony's policies may suck, but their technology is always of the highest level.
