Yesterday, we reported on the statement several kernel developers had signed that urged hardware manufacturers to open up their Linux modules and drivers. "We, the undersigned Linux kernel developers, consider any closed-source Linux kernel module or driver to be harmful and undesirable," the statement read. Nvidia, which delivers probably the most prominent closed-source Linux driver, has reiterated its position concerning this matter.

I bet that none of the people who voted me down has ever taken part in the OpenGraphic and/or Nouveau projects, isn't it ? It's easy to vote me down, yet pretty harsh to hold on face to the reality : nVidia's propriety remains intact, everybody's complaining they do not throw their $$$ work out of the 'windows' :/ Would any of you feed me for free ? Set me a place to live and sleep for free ? I bet none of you, so why asking nVidia to do ? They are paying hard their coders to do the work, you are just asking the source code for tweaking purposes, the most part of the stuff being done by nVidia, it's not fair to ask access to everything. Improve 'Nouveau' if you want a complete OSS driver... Just to make you notice, I'm also a Linux user, Ubuntu 8.04, the integratd nv_new 169.21 driver works pretty well out of the box, no needs to tweak things !

In several places around the web, the company is replacing the existing 'Talk' platform with a new one called 'Hangouts' that sharply diminishes support for the open messaging protocol known as XMPP (or sometimes informally Jabber), and also removes the option to disable the archiving of all chat communications. These changes represent a switch from open protocols to proprietary ones, and a clear step backward for many users." That's why I always say: only suckers trust companies.

The executive revealed that HTC sold about five million One units since launch, a performance that is deemed encouraging. However, sales have been limited by the persisting supply issues that still plague the production of the HTC One." Finally some good news for HTC. Five million units amidst supply constraints is very impressive.

"Sony gave the PS4 50% more raw shader performance, plain and simple (768 SPs @ 800MHz vs. 1152 SPs & 800MHz). Unlike last generation, you don't need to be some sort of Jedi to extract the PS4's potential here. The Xbox One and PS4 architectures are quite similar, Sony just has more hardware under the hood. Weâll have to wait and see how this hardware delta gets exposed in games over time, but the gap is definitely there. The funny thing about game consoles is that itâs usually the lowest common denominator that determines the bulk of the experience across all platforms. On the plus side, the Xbox One should enjoy better power/thermal characteristics compared to the PlayStation 4. "The Verge has learned that HTC's Chief Product Officer, Kouji Kodera, left the company last week. Kodera was responsible for HTC's overall product strategy, which makes the departure especially notable on the heels of the global launch of the make-or-break One. It's not just Kodera. In the past three-odd months, HTC has lost a number of employees in rapid succession." I really hope HTC pulls it together.

Just to make things clear, as obviously someone has taken offense from the truth (live with it, yet nVidia don't release their source code) : nVidia invest a load of money into research & development, which turns into propritary hardware, which is driven with the suitable software. Don't fell offended, it the way it works, period. *IF* nVidia drives 95% of their revenu from the Windows market, it's pretty normal their concentrate 95% of their efforts on that market. But since all OSS noobs wants everything for free, holding up the GPL as a possible treat, I bet that you (me) guys gets only what we paid for. Remind me, what have you paid for your driver ? 5% of the market share ? So that's pretty normal it works at 5% of its full capabilities...
NOoooooOW if you're interrested into a customizable open-hardware, a customizable open-software, just F*****G do it, *ALL* of it ! I already told complaining people to focus on the http://opengraphics.org/ project that, well, exists for quite a long time now (on the computer scale) and haven't benefited much from the "ImpreSSSSSive Linux geeks horse-power", otherwise its openess would have allowed something matching the latests nVidia and/or AMD/ATI specs ! Think about it, the night when you fell asleep...
I'll conclude that *IF* the world would be so much of a wonderful place if everything was free, I ask you : where are the free computers ? where are the free cars ? where are the free homes ? why wouldn't everyone just work for free then ? After all, free plans are available from various places (scans from P2P, ...) and everybody ain't that stupid. So why aren't there more 'free hardware' running out there ? Think about it, twice, the night when you fell asleep...
So I recommand you, when you switch from a supported plateform (Windows, Mac OSX, ...) to so various unknown systems, just check that it is supported by your hardware vendor. Don't complain afterward, it's useless... You won't take nVidia into hostage, they drives their revenu from keeping their industrial secret out of sight, just understand this. And if it wasn't the case, being unable to make enough profit, should I remind you... 3Dfx ? Kyro ?
