Linux So you thought Linux was the key to the Eee PC's success? Not so, according to ASUS. "The bulk of the requests and requirements we see in the marketplace are for the model with Windows rather than Linux," says Henry Lee, Acer's senior product manager. "It's a give and take between simplicity of usage for the masses versus full customisation. The Linux version is really only to use exactly what is provided, and someone in the know can easily remove what's been installed. But consumers are accustomed to the Windows environment, and the Windows version will be a stronger player eventually." Editor's Note: More broadly, this piece examines whether the popularity of the Eee and its Linux-bearing cousins will be sustained, or if they will ultimately get beaten out in the netbook space by Windows-based versions. What do you think?

See, i would but one for ONLY two reasons (In no particular order).
1. Super Cheap Portable PC
2. Linux

If i DID find a Super Cheap Portable PC, and it had Windows on it, i would be scared that it would overheat and fry the thing.

and i dont need to spend $300 for a PC that i will eventually use to fry eggs on form it overheating from running Windows.

heh ;)

I bought mine to have a cheapish ultraportable, and I bought it with the intention to learn linux.

It's quite hard to resist the temptation to just stick XP onto it and be done with it, though. I must be stupid, but I even have trouble finding a way to install FF3 (the damned Xandros version ASUS stuck on it comes with version 2.0.0.11).

but I'm going to resist the urge, and learn to live with linux. I just hope I can find a light distro that works properly on it, out of the box. (light precludes mandriva, guys)
