If I remember correctly, the "old" StarOffice I did use in versions 3, 4 and 5 had implemented a kind of tabbed document handling, much as the "task bar" from fvwm95. OpenOffice abandoned this concept in favour of multiple windows. I think this is due to the fact that StarOffice included an own kind of window manager...

its also possible in windows managers like fluxbox to group different windows in a tab simply by middle clicking a window bar and drop it on another open window bar
for example, open office doesnt support tabs so if i want to have 2 opened documents, i will have to have 2 instances of open office and 2 entries in the taskbar ..to join them together in fluxbox, all that is required is just dragging one window ontop of another and they will be joined as tabs and they will have different colors to show which one has focus ..
it would have been nice to have this feature in "main stream" window manages
