last time i checked, open office has an old and unmaintained plugin that adds the ability to open multiple documents in tabs
If I remember correctly, the "old" StarOffice I did use in versions 3, 4 and 5 had implemented a kind of tabbed document handling, much as the "task bar" from fvwm95. OpenOffice abandoned this concept in favour of multiple windows. I think this is due to the fact that StarOffice included an own kind of window manager...
