GNU, GPL, Open Source Free Software/open source often gets a bad rap for innovating. It just rips-off the work of commercial developers, right? Not so, as this Linux Format piece argues. FLOSS has pioneered, or been a catalyst in, some notable changes in the computing world. Several of these innovations are OS-related.

Regardless of VNC's pedigree, as the other poster said, remote desktop software has been around a long time. Farallon's Timbuktu has been around since the late 80's. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Timbuktu_(software)

I think the most notable points that can made about VNC are that:

- it's freely-available.
- it's available for almost any OS you can name.
- and assuming the presence of VNC display driver, it's finally approaching the speed/responsiveness of stuff like remote X or RDesktop.
