It is in fact the entire BlackBerry OS running in a VM. It loads up like a regular BlackBerry and everything.

Okay, good, so it's not just another case of the media confusing "virtualisation" with "running apps".

Judging by the screen shot... I'd assume it's the REAL Blackberry OS simply running in a Java Virtual Machine. I guess one could run each individual program inside its own java VM, but I doubt it.
However, I could be completely wrong..
