Mac OS X MacNN reports that Apple today released Mac OS X 10.4.2, which the company says delivers overall improved reliability and compatibility for Mac OS X v10.4 and is recommended for all users. It includes fixes for file sharing, authentication, autologin, AirPort/wireless access, several graphics updates, .Mac fixes, Apple's core applications, and more.

Just updated, and all is well so far. Indeed, I seem to notice an improvement in font smoothing on my PB's LCD display ("Automatic" setting, which should correspond to Medium hinting). Does anybody have any hard info on possible changes to the font rendering system?

Now, this is rumour only, so take it with a cup of salt; from what I have heard, one of the things holding back Quartz 2D extreme is the font rendering side, and the inconsistancies when 2D extreme is enabled and disabled - maybe what you have noticed is part of them fixing up those problems - I don't know.

Just as a side issue, it would be nice if Apple were a little more open like SUN, and allow their employees to blog and inform users about what is happening, and why a certain feature isn't enabled by default.
