Hardware, Embedded Systems We've been able to drop the world of 32bit for a while now, with 64bit processors and support for them being prevalent in all popular, modern operating systems. However, where Mac OS X and Linux seem to make the move to 64bit rather effortlessly, Windows has more problems. Even though 32bit applications should run fine on 64bit Windows, some don't; and to make matters worse, drivers need to be 64bit, as there's no support for 32bit drivers in 64bit versions of Windows. Still, Gizmodo claims that with Windows 7, the time is right to take the plunge. But really, is it so? And why do Linux and Mac OS X seem to handle the transition so much easier?

Either you are not telling the entire story or you do virtually nothing on you windows 64 machines. The 64 bit versions went through a period when it was so unstable unreliable or hardware was just not supported; in all three instances it was largely because of drivers. Don’t get me wrong . . . I make six figures because of Microsoft so I keep my complaining to a minimum. But when people say they went to MS 64bit and had no problems there is a reason as stated in the beginning of my post.

XP x64 gets confused by DVD-RAM optical drives...especially the newer ones. Also there is currently no painless way of getting VPN (Cisco) to work on that OS. Other than that, and the fact that a lot of electronics manufacturers do not make drivers for that OS (Canon, et al) I think its a damn fine OS. There are alternatives to all those problems I mentioned but still its a solid OS. It has gotten a lot better than the situation was 2 years ago for that OS that is for sure.
