GTK+ The GTK+ guys have released GTK+ 2.16. As always, this new release is source and binary compatible with the previous GTK+ release. In case you don't know: "GTK+ is a multi-platform toolkit for creating graphical user interfaces. Offering a complete set of widgets, GTK+ is suitable for projects ranging from small one-off tools to complete application suites."

Overview?

There seems to be little excitement about this release, so a question: What are its major benefits apart from a step towards GTK3?

Does it ad new featuers that allow new things to be done? is it faster? Better integration with Windows?

Incremental updates of software are good, but I had expected there to be some enthusiasm at the release of such an important toolkit. Instead it took a few days for any site to report its release. Weird.

(btw, I am not complaining, just nonplussed.)

A further question, will the next Major release of GTK be GTK 3, or will there be like a GTK2.18 first?

This release has nothing to do with GTK+ 3.0. Development for GTK+ 3.0 takes place in different branches, for example:

http://live.gnome.org/GTK+/NewThemeApi/Hackfest/Branches

Does it ad new featuers that allow new things to be done? is it faster? Better integration with Windows?

It's linked in the article:

http://mail.gnome.org/archives/gtk-list/2009-March/msg00075.html

Section "What's new in GTK+ 2.16".

A further question, will the next Major release of GTK be GTK 3, or will there be like a GTK2.18 first?

Since there will be at least GNOME 2.26 (on wednesday) and GNOME 2.28 before GNOME 3.0 (AFAIK), I assume that there will be a GTK 2.18 release, too. (usually 6 months release cycle)
