As was already revealed by eWeek earlier this week, the EU has imposed a massive fine on Intel for abusing its monopoly position. The fine is larger than the one given to Microsoft: 1.06 billion EUR, or 1.44 billion USD, opposed to the 899 million EUR fine imposed upon Microsoft.

P.S. Anybody else tired of the SSSE3 / SSE4.1 / 4.2 / 4a / SSE5 / AVX crapola? God forbid they work together to develop a single standard!
Single standard may well mean LLVM from Apple's coffers before too long. That way you can install to any processor from the bitcode files regardless of the Intel/AMD/ARM/MIPS/SPARC affiliation. I'd prefer that the world value their processors based on capability rather than compatibility.

The Tizen Greek Community has some screenshots of a very recent build of Tizen running on a Samsung GT-i8800. It looks wholly unremarkable.

Joint statement to The Next Web from Microsoft and Google: "Microsoft and YouTube are working together to update the new YouTube for Windows Phone app to enable compliance with YouTube's API terms of service, including enabling ads, in the coming weeks. Microsoft will replace the existing YouTube app in Windows Phone Store with the previous version during this time." Good to know these children stopped acting like little pricks. Can we have full Google support in Windows 8 now, please?

Yahoo is acquiring Tumblr, the microblogging and social networking website, for $1.1 billion USD. Tumblr offers little revenue but lots of eyeballs if Yahoo can monetarize them. Now Yahoo is bidding for Hulu, the streaming video service. After years of ineffective responses while Google, Facebook, and others took large chunks of the online advertising market, Yahoo is fighting back. Can Yahoo reignite the momentum it had at the turn of the century? What do you think?

In several places around the web, the company is replacing the existing 'Talk' platform with a new one called 'Hangouts' that sharply diminishes support for the open messaging protocol known as XMPP (or sometimes informally Jabber), and also removes the option to disable the archiving of all chat communications. "Sony gave the PS4 50% more raw shader performance, plain and simple (768 SPs @ 800MHz vs. 1152 SPs & 800MHz). Unlike last generation, you don't need to be some sort of Jedi to extract the PS4's potential here. The Xbox One and PS4 architectures are quite similar, Sony just has more hardware under the hood. A few years ago you couldn't get away from all the "AMD rocks, Intel is teh sux0rz" comments, whining about Intel's monopoly. Then came the Core 2, and everybody jumped ship for faster speed (plus Intel did a massive ad campaign). And yes, it's always been suspicious / annoying that so many OEMs don't sell enough (or any) AMD chips (ahem, Dell).
I guess the really dumb question is whether Intel would ever consider buying AMD (if the latter dies), letting their engineers work on a separate fork of a cpu "for comparison". Hey, internal competition, better than nothing, right? But there's probably too much personal animosity to let that happen. Still, we all admit "friendly" competition is good ... but not getting along helps nobody.
