Do you realize you can easily switch RGB to BGR on Gnome through Theme Preference/Fonts?
Yes, you can... Now try to explain to a normal a user what is that?
Now explain a normal user the difference between the three types of antialiasing and the three types of hinting? At the end explain to them what hinting is?
By the time you finish, the person is looking to a Windows machine or a Mac. Should it be done different? Of course, people are people, not computer enthusiast, they do not care which algorithm is used or what mode is better for my particular brand of monitor. They just want the thing working.

Does a normal user care about antialiasing to begin?

Obviously a problem with monitor setup, nothing do to with Mac nor Windows nor any Linux distribution.
