People have been trying to replace X for a long time. It hasn't worked for the simple reason because so much code is dependent on it, twenty years or so. Since X and the parts that dependent on it are developed by so many people you can't simply be MS and say "Here is where we begin anew". Thus X goes on and on.
I use the best tool for the job and right now that tool is Windows Vista, the first Windows I have used since 3.11.
