The main problem with X is the software development lifecycle is a bit of a mess, I suspect there is not a lot of testers, not a lot of developers and the fact that people don't report bugs in the software
... did you? If there is a bug and you don't report it how is it supposed to be fixed?
Not to have a go at you personally I have done it myself ... e.g. I complained to a friend about a ACPI bug in OpenBSD and he said "did you bother reporting it?", I had to admit it didn't.
There are many on here that say "lets start again", anyone that has ever worked on a halfway sophiticated software project that it is not feasible with the developer power available.
The new chairman of Xorg is an OpenBSD guy (Matthew Herb) and people from the OpenBSD team are very anal about thier release cycle and code quality (which is a good thing) .. things should improve. I have already noticed a great improvement in monitor detection by X.
