Open Source is not a license. It's a method of development. It suposedly certify license that are supposed to be Open Source.
http://www.opensource.org/
Open source is a development method for software that harnesses the power of distributed peer review and transparency of process. The promise of open source is better quality, higher reliability, more flexibility, lower cost, and an end to predatory vendor lock-in.
http://www.opensource.org/docs/osd
But then instead of watching for Open Source development , it tends to do pretty much everything else badly and is responsible for taking pot shot at Free Software and the Open Source movement itself.
For instance, BSD was the subject-matter of the AT&T vs BSDi lawsuit that set it back for some time
UNIX = 1969
BSD = 1977
FSF = 1985
GNU/Linux = 1991
AT&T vs BSDi = 1992
OSI = 1998
BSD was around 2 decades before GNU/linux and Windows became really prominent on Desktop in 1995.
At the same time Linux captured the minds of a growing group of developers.
No , GNU/Linux devloped into an industry and attracted entrepreneur ( distribution ) and investors ( Stock market ) and corporations ( IBM , Dell , Etc ... ).
Besides that PR and community attitude also helps
No , it helps when the people in it are not traitor , thieves , coward , and liar.
Stallman still work on/at the FSF.
Linus Torvalds still work on/at the Linux kernel.
Etc ...
Is Windows the most popular operating system because it has the best license?
GNU/Linux is the most popular Operating System.
Microsoft knows how to do PR, conduct business, etc
Microsoft know how to make illegal and criminal deal that blocked all other OS from the OEM. Until GNU/Linux.
Apple is also a whole lot better at it (with a partially BSD codebase)
Apple is #56 in computer shipment. HP is #1 , Dell is #2 , Acer is #3.
Apple code may be based on/of BSD , but they make sure it's relicensed and closed. They also don't contribute back to any BSD.
leaving both Linux and freeish BSDs in the dust
Red Hat alone as more user then Apple , add Fedora and you have Microsoft territory add all the other desktop distribution and Microsoft and Apple are dwarf.
But that's not all go supercomputer it's entirely exlsuively GNU/Linux.
Same with webserver.
Same with content server.
Same with movie rendering.
Most Search engine use GNU/Linux
Most E-commerce site use GNU-Linux.
Most Stock exchange use GNU/Linux.
Etc ...

What you , and your kins don't get is that alone Open Source as never been a be all and working solution in itself. Otherwise it Would have worked with UNIX and BSD.
There are a whole lot more factors to consider than the license. For instance, BSD was the subject-matter of the AT&T vs BSDi lawsuit that set it back for some time. At the same time Linux captured the minds of a growing group of developers. Besides that PR and community attitude also helps. Is Windows the most popular operating system because it has the best license? No, Microsoft knows how to do PR, conduct business, etc. Apple is also a whole lot better at it (with a partially BSD codebase), leaving both Linux and freeish BSDs in the dust (yes, I know that Darwin is also open source software).
