Ubuntu, Kubuntu, Xubuntu We reported earlier on a blog post entitled "Ubuntu Report Card (2009)" where the author detailed how they felt the Ubuntu experience had improved over the years. In a follow-up series of articles looking at the future, Tanner Helland has written 10 different broadly-scoped feature requests that [he] 'and many others would like to see by the time Ubuntu 10.10 rolls around'.

As I said before, I can't say that I disagree about the file semantics, and it should not be a reason to switch OS. (At least IMHO).

But in the end, Linux -really- needs a good hardware independent sound server / mixer. Pulse may or many not the solution - but in 3 years time, we will not understand how we could live without it...

I don't see Pulse taking over any more than ALSA did. It all works, and is getting better, but the design and direction just isn't one that will get my vote. The ex-Bell-labs Unix/Plan9 elders I don't think would approve how this all hangs together.

I'm 3/4 through Lion's commentary on Unix 6 source, those guys really knew their stuff, and won't have grown Unix like it has done, Plan9 is how they would have done it. Linux audio seams to be completely ignoring the Unix wisdom. It depresses me. :-(
I blame Windows for polluting OS thinking! ;-)

Glendix might help, but there is no mention of audio, and I'm not holding my breath.

I guess for me, not being a Unix component is a big deal, but not quite enough to leave Linux and make my life more difficult.
