Speculating here, but I bet nvidia over valued themselves.
Intel has larrabee coming. That is what is supposed to compete with ati/amd.
Considering larabee is just another x86 based architecture I suspsect it may be quite open source friendly. It could very well be a serious game changer (if it doesn't suck).

Let's face it, Intel's hardware graphics sucks, big time! AMD made the smart move to buy ATi, and Intel should make the smart move to buy nVidia. AMD is supposedly working on CPU/GPU combined processors, and Intel will be left with to competing product unless it either joins forces with nVidia or just buys them. It's the smart move...
