IBM IBM has revamped its entry-level Unix servers with new processors and an Integrated Virtualisation Manager aimed at the SME market, and launched a vitriolic attack on rival Sun Microsystems. Can someone please explain why someone (or even some corporation) would pay $9000 for something that specwise doesn't seem to be all that hot?

If you have over $10,000 worth of AIX applications and you want them to run faster, it's cheaper to buy a POWER5 than to re-buy all your applications for AMD64. Also, POWER5 has better floating-point performance than Opteron or Xeon.
