As far as I know, it is not a Canonical contribution. The systray over dbus design has been made by KDE folks in Q4 2010/Q1 2009... See Aaron Seigo blog for more info...

You're confusing two thing. Icons via dbus is a KDE design.
I was explicitly writing menus via dbus and that's by Canonical: http://people.canonical.com/~agateau/dbusmenu/index.html
