The Hurd is not competing with Linux. There is Debian/Hurd and it works even if it is not complete. I believe it is a fun kernel to work with. There are many stupid comments here from people who don't know what they are talking about.
Linux is the finished kernel. Even The Hurd developers agree. There is no point in doing linux again.
The Open Source vs Free Software debate has been done to death. Repeating those arguments over and over again is pointless. Everybody know them already.
