A couple of days ago we talked about how the RIAA and NAB are planning on asking US Congress to mandate FM radio chips inside every cell phone. This plan was met with some ridicule, so the NAB decided to write a blog post addressing the critics. Most of the post is overshadowed by an overdose of America's favourite national pastime: WE ARE ALL GOING TO DIE. 9/11!

The Tizen Greek Community has some screenshots of a very recent build of Tizen running on a Samsung GT-i8800. It looks wholly unremarkable.

Joint statement to The Next Web from Microsoft and Google: "Microsoft and YouTube are working together to update the new YouTube for Windows Phone app to enable compliance with YouTube's API terms of service, including enabling ads, in the coming weeks. Microsoft will replace the existing YouTube app in Windows Phone Store with the previous version during this time." Good to know these children stopped acting like little pricks. Can we have full Google support in Windows 8 now, please?

Yahoo is acquiring Tumblr, the microblogging and social networking website, for $1.1 billion USD. Tumblr offers little revenue but lots of eyeballs if Yahoo can monetarize them. Now Yahoo is bidding for Hulu, the streaming video service. After years of ineffective responses while Google, Facebook, and others took large chunks of the online advertising market, Yahoo is fighting back. Can Yahoo reignite the momentum it had at the turn of the century? What do you think?

In several places around the web, the company is replacing the existing 'Talk' platform with a new one called 'Hangouts' that sharply diminishes support for the open messaging protocol known as XMPP (or sometimes informally Jabber), and also removes the option to disable the archiving of all chat communications. These changes represent a switch from open protocols to proprietary ones, and a clear step backward for many users." That's why I always say: only suckers trust companies.

According to an anonymous HTC executive cited by WSJ, the crucial HTC One is selling 'pretty good so far'. The executive revealed that HTC sold about five million One units since launch, a performance that is deemed encouraging. However, sales have been limited by the persisting supply issues that still plague the production of the HTC One." Finally some good news for HTC. Five million units amidst supply constraints is very impressive.

"Sony gave the PS4 50% more raw shader performance, plain and simple (768 SPs @ 800MHz vs. 1152 SPs & 800MHz). Unlike last generation, you don't need to be some sort of Jedi to extract the PS4's potential here. The Xbox One and PS4 architectures are quite similar, Sony just has more hardware under the hood. Weâll have to wait and see how this hardware delta gets exposed in games over time, but the gap is definitely there. The funny thing about game consoles is that itâs usually the lowest common denominator that determines the bulk of the experience across all platforms. On the plus side, the Xbox One should enjoy better power/thermal characteristics compared to the PlayStation 4. You don't get anywhere near the same amount of news coverage about Europe that Europeans get about America.
Fine by me, I prefer to stay out of other people's (sovereign nations) business. Why your news covers American domestic affairs is not under my control.
No I would not. Why should I? Why should I judge what is important to the people of another nation who have been raised in a specific and unique environment of their own.
Well, the news does skew and twist issues. That I understand. Watch the news over here for an hour and you'll probably want to vomit!
I think in the end, people are people and governments are governments no matter where you go. I get up in the morning, give my daughter a kiss (she's always first in the room, climbing on us), pet my dogs, play with the cats, feed them, brew a pot of coffee and go to work. I "get home" (in quotes because I work from home) make dinner and hang out with my wife and kids and go to bed.
My government makes mistakes. Sometimes the officials TRY to do the RIGHT thing but mess up in their implementation. Sometimes they are just corrupt, tainted by corporate lobbyists and big money. People are susceptible to such things.
No matter how you slice it, it's a mess. The political culture has mutated into something I personally don't like (and others as well) but nothing is instantaneous. Groups try to change the way things are done...
I just don't see how or why this makes US citizens "ignorant hicks" (I know, not your words). Finally, one last thing to consider... the news agencies HERE love the big or flashy stories and often focus on something that is a minority, fidget with poll numbers by asking questions that force a strange answer, etc.
Most of the news is crap these days.
I've had the pleasure to work with Europeans from Ireland, Germany and France. Just regular people like myself. In the couple years I worked with them I've had offers to bring my whole family over and stay in their house for a vacation! Very nice people. And what's surprising about that is we worked in a difficult part of our business, dealing with highly disgruntled customers - so there was generally a high level of stress involved.
Anyway, my whole point is we really are all the same. The people who live in South Africa, China, Pakistan... are no different from you or me. The people in power might be annoying, but hey...
