Graphics, User Interfaces As an answer to someone asking whether Unity will require a working OpenGL stack to operate in Ubuntu 11.04 "Natty Narwhal", Mark Shuttleworth announced that Canonical would offer an optional, QT-based, "2D" implementation of Unity. Here is a video, too.

That was my first thought too... machines that need the 2D fallback are the machines that will struggle most to run both GTK and Qt-based software stacks at once.


Not really.

Machines that need 2D fallback are the machines that don't have proper GPU drivers (as is often the case with ARM). They may well have good amounts of RAM available.
