I'm not Dutch, but we have the same expression. It literally means "the bullet went through the church". We say: "Die koel is deur die kerk". Edited 2011-01-19 03:38 UTC
It is a dutch (and also south african, as it turns out) saying. Its origins lie in war. Warring parties did not fight in churches, out of respect. As soon as one of them violated that rule it meant that the church stopped being a safe haven.
