Xfce When we reported on the release of Xfce 4.8, we ignored a statement inside the release announcement about the lack of new features coming to the BSD world. The statement was a bit disconnected from the rest of the press release, but Xfce developer Jannis Pohlmann has published a blog post giving a few more details about the issue.

Does everything really have to be so portable?

Would a stack of closeley integrated Linux-components (or any other OS for that matter) be that bad?

I can see that it maybe has to for server stuff, but for desktop?

Actually, no. Except the fact that, in general, good software is inherently portable. Non-portable software often means poor, bad designed, buggy software. With this in mind, you can make your own assumptions.
