Xfce When we reported on the release of Xfce 4.8, we ignored a statement inside the release announcement about the lack of new features coming to the BSD world. The statement was a bit disconnected from the rest of the press release, but Xfce developer Jannis Pohlmann has published a blog post giving a few more details about the issue.

Seriously though, most BSD users go with a full service desktop like KDE/GNOME or superminimalist with WindowMaker/dwm.

I tend to use Windowmaker, but install many of the KDE tools, so at whatever point I need any of the HAL-connected features (or KDE's awesome virtual filesystem), I just pull up Konqueror or Kate, but other than that, I like my desktop to stay out of the way.

- Using BSD since 1999; using BSD as a desktop since 2003.
