I do not disagree with anything you just said :-) Please understand that it's not my intention to say the developers must work on more/better 2D drivers. I, personally, just feel it's a better use of resources and a more logical goal than 3D acceleration for one or two models of GPUs.
I do not appear to have opened up a ticket for improved radeon support. My only previous ticket concerning video support, though, still seems to be open:
