This is the second time in this thread that you have called Thom out for his lack of effort. As a casual reader, it appears to me that others can contribute to OS News as well. Have you done this? No?
Yes, actually I have. Just not for a long time because I stopped visiting for a long time. There was nothing worth seeing here. The pace of new content slowed way down, and by the time it got posted, it was old news.
Have you launched a competing site
Launching a competing site and posting content is the easy part. Getting enough exposure to make it worthwhile is the hard part.

That's not my intent. If Thom wants to do it, I have no desire to take it away from him.
credibility to your criticism?
The criticism is perfectly valid because what I said was true. Especially the part about not having new content available on Monday morning when most people are checking for the latest IT news. That has really got to hurt traffic, because again, people check their RSS feed, and it's the same story every time "Nothing new to see here".
I am constantly amazed at how aggressive some people are about criticizing services while providing absolutely no value themselves.
I do provide value because I comment. Comments are an important part of a site like this. And as I said, I have contributed content in the past. Just not for awhile.

The Wii U is turning into the 21st century's Virtual Boy.

"In NixOS, the entire operating system - the kernel, applications, system packages, configuration files, and so on - is built by the Nix package manager from a description in a purely functional build language. The fact that it's purely functional essentially means that building a new configuration cannot overwrite previous configurations. Most of the other features follow from this." Interesting approach. A Linux distribution, sure, but with some very refreshing ideas about system configuration.

Appfour added, among other features, C/C++ support to its new version of AIDE. From Android-IDE, "Now you can write parts of your app or your whole app in C/C++ on your device. AIDE supports the Standard Android NDK toolchain (GCC 4.6 + Bionic, STL, ...). No changes are necessary if you want to build an app developed on a PC with Eclipse. C/C++ development is fully integrated: Build errors appear in the error list and files can easily be navigated to with Go to file. The editor supports C/C++ syntax highlighting."

Ars nails it: "The answer is that Google did announce what amounts to a fairly substantial Android update yesterday. They simply did it without adding to the update fragmentation problems that continue to plague the platform. Glass is getting some love at Google I/O as well. New applications have been released - Facebook, Twitter, Evernote, Elle, Tumblr, and CNN. Perhaps more interesting: the newly announced Google Glass Developer Kit will allow offline applications and direct hardware access - great for hacking and expanding Glass' potential. This kit will really allow hackers to put Glass through its paces.

Absolutely fascinating stuff. I'm a League of Legends player, and to be honest, the community isn't nearly as bad as some make it out to be. I'm happy Riot games has the guts to employ science to address the issue.

Windows Phone doubles from a few to twice few, iOS loser market share as its growth is slower than that of the overall market. BlackBerry continues slide into irrelevance.

Have you made any sort of personal contribution that could be measured against Thom's to give credibility to your criticism? No?
I am constantly amazed at how aggressive some people are about criticizing services while providing absolutely no value themselves. Offering reasoned, civil, and constructive criticism is fine of course and, in fact, a kind of contribution in my mind. Being a vocal peer in a community of contributors seems legit to me. Being an outspoken critic of for-fee products and services that you have purchased (or even have not actually) is also reasonable of course. Being a loud-mouth parasite (sorry non-paying consumer) has never felt ok to me.
I wish I could see into people's minds and understand just how they convince themselves that this kind of behaviour makes sense.
