Alpha visuals already have strong support in the X server. Why isn't it all over your desktop now? Various reasons. Toolkit devs haven't exploited the potentials of composite and alpha aware visuals. Application authors haven't either. And most importantly, compositing operations require drivers that on the whole the OSS community doesn't have the information to write. MS does. You can't blame that on RedHat, IBM, or Novell. That's politics and nothing else

Thats why I bought an Nvidia card just to use xcompmgr. Only Nvidia and ATI have the resources to make good drivers, and I'm sick of waiting on OSS drivers to catch up to have a modern Linux desktop.

It's not a matter of resources or catchup. Only Nvidia and ATI have the specs for their cards. If they gave these out then good OSS drivers would exist.
