SUN Microsystems These days, engineers at Sun Microsystems have their counterparts at chipmaker AMD on speed dial. Sun, whose turnaround plan bets heavily AMD Opteron-based processor servers, has gained the ear of the chipmaker over the last two years and thus is helping shape the future of the Opteron, which charged on the scene in early 2003 as a competitor to Intel's Xeon.

Actually, Sun was in talks to buy AMD a few years ago.. I cant remember if this was public or not.. Anyway, they decided for strategic reasons that instead they would work closely together to develop a new CPU. A few years after that alliance, the Operton shows up. Sun was involved with the Opeteron from the beginning.

I'm guessing that Sun and AMD knew that if the Opeteron was released as a Sun x86 chip, it would have been very hard to get IBM, HP, Dell, etc. to use it. So the alliance (as opposed to a merger/buyout) was a far better plan. However, I could still see at some point in the future, the combination of AMD and Sun.

Sun is making some really tactical moves. If you've been counting Sun out of the game, I'd reconsider and keep a closer eye on them....

Well lets hope they can maintain a positive relationship with AMD. SUN liketo throw fits when it doesn't get its way.
