"When you open a file with Notepad and the first four characters in the file are .LOG, what does Notepad do?
* Notepad inserts the current time and date at the end of the file
* If there's no other text on the first line, Notepad inserts the time and date at the end
* Adds a new line to the end of the file with the current time and date
* Adds a new line to the end of the file with the current time and date, along with a carriage return

who writes this shit? options 1, 2 and 4 are all basically the same
"

It adds a time and date stamp plus a carriage return at the end of the file. The other answers are incorrect. It is an access log and is not automatically saved by default. It has its uses...
