"Shares in Nokia plunged 17% after the mobile phone giant surprised investors by saying it expected to make losses in the first half of 2012. The Finnish company said competition in the industry had led to lower sales particularly in India, the Middle East, Africa and China. Nokia had previously expected to break even in the first quarter." And just when you thought it couldn't get any worse, the Lumia 900 is suffering from a software flaw, and the company has started offering $100 in compensation. Not a good start for such an important flagship device.

MS is destroying Nokia in exactly the same way that they destroyed Silicon Graphics. Get them to employ a a ex-MS executive as as CEO, then systematically destroy the company from within. No doubt as with SGI, MS will end up holding the patents, as Nokia spirals in its death throes. Pity I liked Nokia.
You would have thought that the Nokia board would have known what is coming, but obviously they were too stupid to learn from history.

So Nokia you burned your linux platform. You stopped developing symbian and stopped using QT. You put all your eggs in a huge company that doesn't need you and hasn't been successful on mobile since the N770.

Except they are still not at the point in the Symbian roadmap where it goes away, new versions and new phones on the Symbian line are still coming quickly. As it happens the whole reason why profits collapsed is that Symbian is getting killed in the market by low-end Android, both when it comes to raw units shipped and in profit-margins. You can argue that Meego would have swooped in and saved the company but this seems pretty dubious, the N9 numbers are good, but not that good.

They killed it by self defeating prophecy. The CEO publicly said Symbian sucks and was on the way out. They make new models, they improve it but they ask people not to buy it.
I have Symbian Belle and it is competitive. It compares well with Android graphically speaking and has more feature than any other major OS.
Nokia is worse than Commodore was. Commodore was clueless. Nokia makes great tech but its management want their company to fail. They try very hard to kill the company as fast as they can. They have a clue and they know exactly what to do to kill Nokia. This is worse than incompetent management that Commodore had.

At an event earlier today, Microsoft unveiled the next Xbox - the third model, but confusingly named Xbox One. The big focus was TV, integrated Kinect, and all the other stuff we all expected to be forced down our throats. I think it took them 25 minutes to actually come to what should be the core of the story: gaming. Nothing groundbreaking in the gaming department, except for how Microsoft intends to handle the used games market and borrowing games from friends: pay up, buddy!

The day has finally come! Jolla has finally announced the launch device for its Sailfish operating system - and by god this is a looker. It's decidedly different from other phones out there, but it has good specifications and carries a relatively reasonably price tag - EUR 399, and it's up for pre-order today, shipping in the fourth quarter of this year.

Written by someone who actually contributes code to the Windows NT kernel, the comment on Hacker News, later deleted but reposted with permission on Marc Bevand's blog, paints a very dreary picture of the state of Windows development. The root issue? Think of how Linux is developed, and you'll know the answer.

This is one of those news items that's fun to write, fun to read, fun to comment on, and where no one will be able to say anything unkind. It's all just one big ball of awesome fluffiness. TuneTracker, the BeOS radio automation software, has just released something very special: TuneTracker System 5, the first version designed entirely and specifically for Haiku. In fact, it actually includes Haiku in the software package. Better yet, TuneTracker also unveiled several system-in-a-box products - which have Haiku and TuneTracker pre-installed.

Oh multitasking. That staple of computing that got thrown out the window with many modern smartphones. We got some rudimentary thing in its place - but even as multitasking on phone and tablets improves, its user-visible side remains cumbersome. Windows 8 has a neat implementation, and now it's time Android follows in it footsteps.

They're here! Whether that excites you or not remains to be seen, but the Galaxy S4, which will most likely become the best selling Android smartphone of the year by a huge margin, has been reviewed by all the major sites, and there's lots of interesting conclusions in there - although I think most of you will get the gist.

Nokia has posted its quarterly results for the first quarter of 2013, and just like the quarters that came before, there's not a whole lot of good news in there. The rise in Lumia sales still can't even dream of making up for the sales drop in Symbian phones, and when broken down in versions, the sales figures for Windows Phone 8 Lumias in particular are very disappointing.
