I totally agree. Browsers are over the top (and not speaking about the content they display).
This is why I value SeaMonkey so much: traditional, proven interface design with a powerful engine. And I remember when "Firefox" should have been more lightweight than the Mozilla suite. now it is almost worse...

Such a depressing statement... made even more so because it's true. Just look at Firefox as they try to rip off all of Google's Chrome worst designs, which seemed to have taken Apple's design ideas to the extreme.
I have to admit that there was one area where I didn't care so much about consistency: audio players. Winamp, Sonique, QCD, QMP... they all looked nice and resembled, in a way, a traditional hardware audio player and were fully functional. Still, those like Foobar2000 are nice too in their own way, with their traditional UIs that fit in with the rest of the OS. Now software audio players these days... where they get rid of the stop and pause buttons, leaving you with only one big button that changes between the two based on the playback state and a back and forward button beside it... I better shut up, I'm starting to feel like I have to puke just thinking about it.
