This happens with all package management systems. Not just yum.
This doesn't happen to me in Firefox, as I told before. Or maybe you are not talking about that, maybe you are talking about what you wrote "I tend to stop doing anything mission critical when doing an update in Linux". In that case, if it can be helpful for you: I see what programs are going to be updated, and I close them if I have them opened; I update and open the programs again if required.
I don't have this worry in Windows.
But people have a way to know if they have to restart Windows so that all the updates are applied? :-? I'm curious. Possibly a way exists?

Mmm... in that case I wouldn't use Yum :-( . Maybe it's an advantage of apt updates.
Last time I tried to update the system (Firefox included) having forgot to close Firefox, Firefox opened a bar saying that it was updated and needed to be restarted, showing a button for the user to do so.
