(Not that I like the mod system, it's abused way too much.)
Steve Jobs was asked how he can know (and be sure!) what is right direction for IT industry.
he replay, that you need to expose yourself to all greatest accomplishments that people already done before, and if you take/expose to these best things/ideas (not only IT related!!), you can be sure that you are in right direction in what you are doing (shaping IT industry back than)!
in context: you should not take 7-years-old CP/M and re-sell it to IBM in 1981. it is a crap.
if you done that, than: your thinking is a crap, your business strategy is crap, your product are crap...
