As the guy writing tracker, I have released a pre-release version of Tracker to interested parties.
Tracker can already do beagle like searches plus it can also do RDF Query searches on any metadata field.
Im hoping to have it as the default search engine for Nautilus search as its written in C and also has very low memory requirements (typically 3-6MB RAM used).
I expect to have it in Gnome VFS shortly...
