I disagree: there are some GREAT applications for Gnome and KDE. As a KDE user, I'll focus on the latter (but the same could be said of Gnome): amaroK (better than iTunes)
iTunes is hardly a good benchmark when comparing audio players (easy to use, but a bloated monstrocity, just like MusicMatch and the rest of their ilk). Still, I've heard great things about this app ... I need to check it out.
K3b (one of the best, easiest CD/DVD burning apps around)
No arguments here.
Konqueror (best file/web/whatever browser around, period).
This is the one I have a problem with. If you're only counting file managers with an integrated web browser (that whole 'convergence' thing, I guess), then I'll give this one to you. But in the realm of file managers, I'ms sorry .. but Directory Opus mops the floor with Konquerer
