The goal of Metacity was not to create a really powerful window manager. The goal was to create an easy, unobstructive window manager. And the reached that goal.
To quote Antoine de Saint-Exupéry: "Perfection is reached, not when there is no longer anything to add, but when there is no longer anything to take away."

Compiz is basically reinventing the wheel by Novell

XGL is a different approach to XeGL which happened directly in Xorg CVS and multiple vendors except Novell working on it
