What are you talking about XGL is a better short term solution. You think that 3d rending is going some where? Anything involving any kind of 2D rendering _anywhere_ on the desktop is a short term solution. If that isn't obvious to you I think you need to look at OSX and Vista who are the competition.

I don't think that there is duplication of effort here. Both projects have pros and cons.
XGL seems to be a better short term solution, it works with existing drivers (including proprietary, binary-only nvidia and ati), and supports must-have extensions like XVideo and accelerated OpenGL.
Architecturaly AIGLX might be better, but only time will tell if this outweighs its current lag in other areas.
Also, Novell seems to have won the backing of NVidia, which is a clear advantage not to be ignored.
