I remember reading these numbers before.
However, this survey doesn't really follow strict rules (It doesn't slice the general Linux-using population... E.g. Enterprise users were unlikely to participate) and I doubt that the resulting numbers are valid.
Never the less, having no numbers of my own (and being a KDE user myself) I will concede...

The desktoplinux.com survey is completely bogus, and not relevant to real world KDE/Gnome usage. As you can see on your link, there was vote tampering by the Yoper community. The Yoper votes were later deleted from the Distribution category, but that still leaves the rest of the survey severely skewed towards the KDE-centric Yoper.
As for online surveys, their value is questionable at best.
