As I sit back, here on March 19th 2019, to review the past 13 years, I cannot help but feel slightly melancholic. I felt it was time to summarize the period in the tech industry between 2006 and 2019. Where did we leave off, where did we go, and where are we going to end up? Note: Yes, the Sunday Eve Column.

Even though I ordered Zeta from an official US reseller store, the product box I received was in the German language (at least part of it was). I recognized the company name, yellowTAB, and the name of the operating system, Zeta. But all other information printed on the box, including the system requirements, were printed in German.

The Cairo vector-based graphics library now has a BeOS port, courtesy of Christian 'biesi' Biesinger. The Cairo library is used in Gecko 1.8 - the engine behind Firefox 1.5 and Seamonkey 1.0 - for SVG and CANVAS tag support, although future plans involve it receiving heavier use for general rendering, and is also receiving increasing use within GTK+, with 2.8 having inital support for it. The availability of this library on BeOS should aid the native porting of GTK+ in the future as well as ensuring that Mozilla products have a future on the platform, and its almost certain to see wider adoption in the future.

Donn Cave has updated his port of Python to BeOS, as well as the Bethon BeOS API interface library. This brings BeOS up to date with other platforms with regards to Python, and merges some independent patchsets into Bethon. Both are for R5.03, meaning that pretty much any BeOS system out there can use them.

I've always been a huge fan of BeOS. However, there was no denying the fact that the BeOS was getting old. As many other BeOS fans, I closely followed two projects: Haiku, and yellowTAB's Zeta. The latter released 1.0 a few weeks ago. Here are the findings of an old BeOS user.

Unfortunately only available in German language, Technoids is the only independent magazine reporting about BeOS(HAIKU) and ZETA constantly. In the seventh issue you will find an interview with Michael Phipps from HAIKU, a ZETA R1 preview, a review of yellowTABs ZETA PC and a lot more. You will Also find an in depth footage covering Apple's Garageband 2 and some other articles regarding other operating systems. So at last a lot of Be mixed with interesting Stuff from other worlds. According to HaikuNews, new open source nVidia 3D drivers are now ready for BeOS. Included are screenshots of Be's 1999 era Quake II port running unmodified and 3D accelerated.

At BeGeistert 14 Daniel "daat" Teixeira from IsComputerOn and Chris Simmons from HaikuNews spent 40 minutes interviewing YellowTab's Bernd Korz and Alan Westbrook, and we covered such topics as the use of GCC, Java, what's new with Zeta, and more. Pictures from the event here.

In the next beta of SkyOS, users can look forward to seeing a completely re-designed Viewer. The new Viewer will take advantage of the powerful features of the SkyFS (derived from Haiku's BFS), including extremely fast searching and organizing of files, on-the-fly filtering of files and folders within the Viewer, fast insertion of meta-data into multiple files, and more. I have been keeping a log of my Linux experiences since August of 2002. At first, I set it up as a textbase of tips. Using the wonderful program Tuxcards, I maintained a diary.

Bryan Varner has created a video which shows Java2D working on BeOS. A mini-interview is also featured which details what has happened during the past few months, and where Java on BeOS is headed.

Well, until beunited tells me to shut up (probably won’t be long) I’m going to attempt to set the record straight and describe the current status of Java on BeOS. I’ve seen a ton of inaccurate information disseminating about the community and feel something should be said by someone who actually does know what’s going on. That seems to be the general state of Haiku / beunited at this point. Too many people don’t know anything and think they do, or like to speculate, and the people who really know things are too busy working on them to keep people overly informed.
