I actually installed Mono today using their binary installer. It works fine on Fedora. I think I downloaded the wrong version though, the old one, not the new one.

Binary installers is a bad thing on fedora unless it uses rpm as it will not update the rpm database and it will be hard to keep track of software dependencys. I havn’t tried the installer though so I don’t know if this is a problem in this case.
Fedora won’t officially support Mono and incorporate Beagle intot he release. They are even now making more idiot decisions such as dropping both the GNOME office applications and KOffice from their release without warning anyone. They have already gone from Fedora 4 Test 1. They were never even put ont he deprecated list for Fedora 3.
I’m becoming extremely disillusioned with them.
Don’t worry they will support mono when Novell is starting to eat their lunch.
Beagle is a technology people want to have. Apple and Microsoft (when/if they get winfs working) will constantly tell Fedora users that it is missing. So redhat will be under enomeous pressure to add it to their enterprise editions, and before that they will test it in Fedora.
I was hoping Ubuntu and Novell would put pressure on Fedora to lisft their game, not start stripping things away.
I’ve used the binary installer provided and I’ll be the first to say it’s welcome and desired. It does nothing to interfere with rpm. It places all files under /opt, as it should. All one needs to do to uninstall, is delete the directory. Normally I would prefer a package but after going through the trouble of installing it on FC1, 2, 3 and RHEL 3 and 4 I am quite happy to see the installer. It worked flawless the first time and took a lot less pain and agony than the packages. The problem with using packages right now for mono is it’s such a moving target. The packages are constantly changing and the dependencies are getting consolidated. Hopefully sometime in the future we’ll see packages for mono with less than 3 or 4 dependencies.

Microsoft will crush distros that incorporate mono under their heel one day. Don’t just flame back if you disagree. Google around. The legal situation of mono is very far from clear. It is cool. But the legal situation needs to change before embracing it. Fedora is being smart. Novel and Miguel are being reckless.

Beagle is a technology people want to have.
People care about Beagle not Mono. Beagle happens to be built using Mono which is a great shame. The best thing the Gnome foundation could do is port Beagle to pure GTK+ and other important Mono apps too. Otherwise Microsoft will always be a bigger threat to the future of free desktops than it should be.
Maybe this is a lost hope but something that I would like to belive.
I like C# as language and even worked as a .Net R&D Engineer back in the Beta 1-2/Framework v1 days, within a company that was a M$ partner.
Now the thing is WHY will any .Net developer want to develop for Mono? They won’t belive me, I’ve been there so I know the programmer culture of M$ shops. So this kind of projects may just in the long run windowize linux and we all end up with a windows that just has a different kernel. No thanks.

anyone been using monodevelop? i tried out sharpdevelop about six months ago and it really wasnt ready for anything serious yet. is monodevelop usable yet?

Just like the best way to deceive someone is to throw in a little fact with a little error.
Look its pretty obvious from the change in direction MS has had with regard to pantents and all the hires relating to patents that they plan on using them for defence and/or offence. Now Microsoft goes to all this trouble to develop this brilliant new technology and then create a powerful set of libraries for it and then submit the language and technology (CLR) as a standard. Now people take that to mean that the whole thing is a standard or RAND etc. But unfortunately if you start using some of those API’s you’ll soon find out that they its a mine field of patents.
Now I know that any software developed today is going to infringe on patents somewhere, but in this case the API’s, some of them not cleared by MS, are copied. It is no accident. Anyway submarine patents have been used before (mp3, LZW). When the time is right and MS needs to use a weapon they will always have this on Mono. Even if all of Novell’s arguments are accurate MS with there army of lawyers and huge patent portfolio can basically bring a lot of GNU/Linux applications down.
So basically as tempting as .Net is it is a little like playing russian roulette. It would also have been nice if the OSS world could have come up with something themselves.
Also please remember that Novell has gone to Microsoft and asked for clarification on the patents in .Net etc. They have never had a response.
Now a lot of what I have said before could be wrong or there could be excellent rebuttals. But at the end of the day it is obvious that Mono provides MS with a powerful card to play sometime in the next 20 years and we don’t need to be giving MS any ammunition, it already owns a lot.
