I don’t know if it is only me but that Microsoft Office 12 GUI isn’t that great. I don’t even like the GUI, it appears as it doesn’t integrate with the rest of the desktop. Anyways Microsoft Office has some great features, but OpenOffice is catching up I think. I’ve been using OO.org for long time now, and Koffice is a program I like too great feature yet integrated to kde fully and more lightweight.
I’m in agreement with this guy, I don’t necessarily like the MS Office 12 user interface. Using it might change my mind, but when I finish school what will be the point of even getting MS office any more unless I’ll need it for work.
I do think MS got creative with the MS Office 12 user interface, I’ll give ’em that. But just because it looks nice to some doesn’t mean everyone should copy. Lets see what other designs are submitted first, you never know when something ingenious and original will come up.

I’m not so sure about that. Office suits in general seam so 20:th century. What I would like to see is a toolset that would make it easy to build business environments including things like workflow management from components backed by some serverside datastorage facility. Perhaps all of it could be tied toghether as some kind of web plugins to keep the deployment costs down.

Actually, I was more thinking of IBM Workplace, but I guess Microsoft is moving in that direction too.
The problem with current Office suits like OpenOffice.org, MS-Office and Koffice is that they just are sort of glorified typewriters and adding machines.
The documents are just stored on hard drives instead of as paper in binders on a shelf. This makes it hard to find and resuse information. A computer should be able to do a lot more than that.
As of now they catch very little of the business process and colaborative efforts going on in an office. It lacks things like workflow, business related structuring of work e.g. by projects, customers, employees,..
E.g. if you do “create new project” you would get a budget spreadsheet, a gantt diagram, an empty project or partly filled out description depending on how your project template is set up. you would then probably get a dialog asking you what human resources that should be attached to the project. When all done perhaps mailing list would be set up.
It should be possible to add/associate documents, e-mails, or meeting and address book references to a certain part of a project by draging it to the corresponding place in the gantt diagram.
All of this of course requres that the next version of KOffice will have some sort of project management part
to do the gantt diagrams among other things.

Personally, I hate Office 12’s look, looks horrible! Some bastardization of simplicity and chunks of screen realestate that take up too much room…. all with a glossy, unreadable polish.

When Apple stops using iName

Their latest product is called Aperture.
Why is it that big of a deal? They write the software so they get to pick the names.
It’s not particular to KDE, a lot of the programs in Gnome start with G, and a lot of Apple products start with a lower case i, e or x. It’s a trade mark; not in the legal sense, but rather recognisable trend that will make people say “hey that’s probably a Gnome/KDE/OS X app” when they see it.
Microsoft applications sometimes start with “Win”, but in Windows it doesn’t happen as frequently. That would probably be because when companies write Windows software they don’t particularly care what the name of the OS is, they just worry about their own products.
If only they had that… Personally I dislike spreadsheets in general, and I find it sad that MS Office compatibility can be such a make or break thing, but in packaging a desktop (KDE) for my workplace, I had to eventually drop out KOffice just because of that. Thankfully, we have a site license to StarOffice 8, but still it would have been nice to keep it in.
What I don’t understand is why in kspread you get the option to save in MS excel format, but when you try to do it, it says that can’t be done. And, according to this, no-one is working on implementing it: http://www.koffice.org/filters/1.4/ Why keep the save option in there then?

well, the basket developer is VERY active, and thinking about all that can be done with his idea. also other dev’s have noticed his app, and are talking/thinking about integration in KDE 4.
I hope that KWord implements a Reveal Codes feature reverse-engineered from WordPerfect. Reveal Codes is by far the most powerful and accurate way to edit a word processing document ever created IMHO. Maybe I’m just partial because I learned on WordPerfect and not Word but Reveal Codes has always been one of WordPerfect’s best features.
It’s too bad that Corel has never been acquired by say Novell who could then open-source WordPerfect Office Suite, imagine how fast the tables could be turned against Microsoft with a truly full featured Office Suite freely available and with file format compatability back to version 1.0. Just Imagine.
