The Syllable team has released Syllable 0.6.1. New in this release: initial ACPI support and better PCI resource management, new application events API, lots of driver updates and additions, new versions of Syllable’s browser and mail client, ports of CUPS and Samba3, and support for the REBOL language.
I’ve been waiting soooooo long for this to come true.
But damn… Thom, you’re too quick to link to this news. I wanted to submit it
EDIT: I don’t what’s best with this release. CUPS, better POSIX compatibility, or the Event class. Oooooooh, my day just got much much better

For those that have no extra partition or pc lying around to test, a VMware image of Syllabe 0.6.1 can be found here: http://www.cilinder.be/syllable
Congratulations Syllable Developers and Users. I’m glad as always to see another smaller OS succeeding and improving.
Nice job syllable devs, keep up the good work!
The screenshots are syllable.org are rather dated, any new ones to be had?
There is a chance that BurningShadow will come up with some sooner or later.
But at least there is this one, which is quite new:

What is the extent of the support for REBOL? Will it be like ARexx under AmigaOS?
Syllable will include the open-source clone of REBOL called Orca (for now, it may be renamed later). Orca is intended to be the primary scripting language for Syllable.
It wouldn’t be far from the truth to consider Orca to be for Syllable, what ARexx is for AmigaOS, or (Object) Rexx for OS/2.
You should visit http://syllable.org/forum.php and search for Orca
Syllable OS that’s who
the OS that thought it could… and it did.
I went to buy the premium CD at http://www.lulu.com/syllable/ but they still have 0.6.0a listed. When they get around to updating the site, I’m buying it.
Interesting project…
I was wondering, anyone have any clue about Syllable’s media framework? Does it use a directshow style framework, what codecs are available for the platform. Does Syllable have any alternatives to VirtualDubMod and AviSynth? Their website talks about their target audience
needing “multimedia playback and encoding” so I am guessing at one point the devs will want to add some multimedia encoding applications….
I told Vanders years ago that unless his OS can dial-up and surf it is not an OS of any pertinant consequence. This is 2006, not 1986
I probably told you the same thing back then: this is an Alpha version that is not feature complete, so things like dial-up arn’t implemented yet. For those with non-dialup internet connections “surfing” works fine. If you want to be constructive, help get dial up working; Arno has ported pppd and it works with PPPoE (DSL) connections. That’s the hard part done. It just needs a little more work to get it working on dial-up.
If you’re not going to do that, then you have to accept the fact that it isn’t done yet and be patient. I know it’s far easier to troll OSNews instead of helping, but you sometimes have to accept that life is a little larger than your own world.
“This is 2006, not 1986”
Yep, and in 2006 dial-up isnt as important as it was in 1986.
