One of Paul Kimmel’s favorites is the term “syntactic sugar” meaning something that, like sweets, isn’t necessary, but tastes good. That’s what the My feature is — syntactic sugar. The difference between the sugary gooey foods you might eat and the My feature is that My is better for you.

Informative article. I always liked the whole “My Computer”, “My Documents”, “My Music” etc in Windows. It makes things more personal(?).
I did a lot of work in VB and loved how quickly one could create programs. I also hated it in certain regards (any VB programmer will know why).
VB.NET provides a great mix. best of both worlds – rapid application development while having maintainable, expandable OOP code.

The “My” stuff is dropped in Vista, last time I checked. “Documents”, “Pictures” instead of “My documents”, etc.

Really? I always found it needlessly condescending towards the user. As if the OS was talking for the person using the computer. Makes me feel like I’m co-opted.

Totally agree. It serves as a really useful, common point of reference…especially when remote assisting a user.
It’s easy to get peeps to gravitate to it.
“my” is a nice short prefix for stuff, very handy.

You’re right, the ‘MyX’ has been droped for ‘X’, also I believe the default short cut in the open dialog is now one level above the original MyDocuments. Personally I wish they would leave it alone, now that we’ve got used to it why change.
…see an icon that said “Documents”, “Music,” etc. I don’t need to be constantly reminded that they’re mine; I’m not that stupid even if ninety-nine percent of the people on the planet were (and they aren’t).
