AfterStep 2.2.6 has been released. As was the case with the last release, the changelog simply reads: “Everything got touched. It’s all good.” If you have 2.1.0 or later installed, you can use the upgrade package. Alternatively, you can wait for your distribution to package it for you.
I’ve an old version of AS installed on a old Slackware box but I don’t use it much. On Freshmeat, the last theme for AS was created in 2003. Someome here still use AfterStep? I’m just curious 😉 And what about WMaker? It doesn’t get updated often nowaday 😐
I like Window Maker very much. It may not be the best window manager in terms of everyday productivity, but it is very pretty and amazingly fast! I often use it.
In several previous surveys I have read that a constant % of people use it regularly. The only (-) point is that -as you say- it is not often updated.

I don’t use AS regularly, but I do use WindowMaker, and I’ve used it for years. Both AS and WM have a pretty stable userbase.
The new AS don’t use theme at the moment, it uses a “look” file for appearance and a “feel” file for behavior. Several new look have been added recently, they are distributed with AS source. If you combine a feel and a look, you might get what you call a theme.

In most WMs, themes are all about the “look”, while the “feel” is altered in a configuration file (which also says which theme to use).

I use it on my FreeBSD box, it’s the best window manager I encountered until today and it works well with my Sun Type 6 keyboard in terms of functionality.

I personally don’t use AfterStep but I’m an FVWM user (AfterStep was originally a variant of FVWM). Personally I got tired to all fancy desktop environments and switched back to good old FVWM, the first desktop/window manager I used when I set up my first Slackware system about ten years ago. Coming back to FVWM was like finally returning home after a long (and maybe pointless) journey…
FVWM doesn’t get updated often and why should it? It can already do practically everything I need.
Good to see it getting development, I’m a big fan of WM and AS.
Bit of a shame regarding the changelog however, makes it a bit less appealing to try the new version out.
