New to the lineup will be Office 2008 for Mac Special Media Edition, which will add Microsoft Expression Media for Mac, a revised version of the iView Media digital asset management utility. iView was acquired by Microsoft in 2006. This version will cost USD 499.95, with a USD 299.95 upgrade price.

I was laughing about that earlier today. Speculation is that “10000” appeared in the code when it should’ve been “0x10000”. OOPS!
Slashdot posters are saying it’s a display bug rather than a calculation error (because graphs still display properly and calculations built on the incorrect cells give correct values). But even if the underlying data is correct, it’s still a MAJOR screw-up for the display of the data to be wrong, particularly for cases where human-beings are eye-balling the spreadsheet themselves (rather than just feeding them into larger calculations).
Huge embarrasment for the Excel team, which I gather is one of Microsoft’s most proud teams.

The fix is going thru internal testing and should be released soon.
Too late, too many versions, too expensive. I switched to iWork and I love it.
Office is a good product (Shame on you Widows team), but I’m just not using it to the level I used to years ago. Sorry Microsoft, but laggy PPC-only Office 2004 has been annoying for quite some while.

I use neooffice quite happily on my mac! I have office x ‘just incase’ but I dont think ive needed to use it for about 2/3 years now
work is a different matter though, my boss is a firm beliver in a single platform office so i am not allowed to use openoffice 🙁

I guess it’s only on OSNews where you’ll find people so keen on NeoOffice. I use it on my Macbook for those rare documents that are sent to me in OO format. Other wise, I just leave it alone. That thing runs slower than MS Office 2004 which is running under emulation on my Mac.

Last I heard it couldn’t do the scripting properly, which could easily sink it in an corporate world who loves those little scripts. It’s been pretty quiet about all of that for some reason.
It feels like Office is where Microsoft really could be hurt, because if they can’t sell that cash cow, they only have Vista left to make them money.
It’s nice to see how much money I will be saving because I don’t buy Microsoft products. Between iWork and NeoOffice I only spent $79 plus tax and $320.95 (plus the different in taxes) to spend on other things. Or … to put into savings.
PS: Nobody at work or at home can tell I don’t use Microsoft products at all even though I share documents, spreadsheets, etc., with them.

I’m pleased to hear that. NeoOffice says it’s based on OpenOffice, which is the only one I use (on GNU/Linux). I don’t do much exchanging, but if I do, I want Windows zombies to be able to read what I wrote without problems.
Hopefully we’ll begin seeing an all new and improved version of MS Office every single year (for $399). Next best thing to a subscription service.
what happened to all that stuff we heard 2 years ago about the x11 version of open office being dropped on os x in favor of an aqua version? i haven’t heard any news since the initial onslaught.

Its actually pretty stable for an alpha.
IBM has recently made Lotus Symphony available for free. Its an office suite which supports the Open Document format. IBM has announced they are working on a Mac version of it to be out in 2008.
Personally, I hope MS Office doesn’t have much fight left in it. The price is just absurd, and while OO.org might not be perfect and might have some obnoxious formatting issues, I can put up with all that knowing that I have saved three to five hundred dollars.
