“Music service Spotify has decided to target iTunes users by introducing iPod syncing capabilities to its own software. That’s not all, though: Spotify is introducing its own MP3 download store, and can now wirelessly sync MP3s to iPhones and Android devices.” Well, if they manage to build client software that’s better than iTunes, then more power to ‘m. Ah what am I saying, it would be a bigger achievement to write client software that’s worse than iTunes.
If I understand this correctly its only going to work spotify’s client on the ipod. So couldn’t apple just deny spotify from selling their app through the itunes app store?
Apple most certainly could. Not sure if the millions of Spotify users will like that, though. They’ll all blame Apple.
Somehow, I don’t think those at Apple really care what their customers think. They have enough people who go after their products because they’re new and shiny, and those people will believe anything Apple say. No doubt they’ll come up with some PR reason that sounds plausible to the gullible and get away with banning Spotify if they decide to take that route.
Unfortunately Free users of Spotify are going to be in for a shock shortly.

Pity because the business model works and quite a few people were prefering to use spotify than bothering to
pirate.
I rather play songs with a couple of ads every 3 or 4 songs, than bother to download via torrents.
Luckily I have already paid for a Spotify Premium Account so I can use it on my Phone.

I’m a Apple fan, however a missing Spotify alone could be enough to drive me to other platforms. I’m sure it is true of many other Apple fans as well.
I think Apple will be quite careful with pushing away Spotify. Remember that they kept Kindle, although it technically breaks some of their rules.

Is this story centred on the US? Spotify have been around for 2 or more years in Europe and I’ve had a free account since before they made them “invite only” (which then became something less “good” for new users but open again to anyone, then something even worse for everyone, including us “old timers”.)
So, Spotify have offered the ability to stream on your PC or Mac since the moment I joined. The client is literally the biggest turn in the world. Absolutely horrible. So, Thom – you got your wish… next time, be more careful what you wish for 😉
The ability to have a certain amount of music on your device – well, this too has been around for a couple of years.. Apple have yet to react to that. Essentially, your subscription entitles you to stream content on the desktop, to store some of that on your PC (so as not to have to re-stream it) and those files can also be on your mobile device (though, I’ve not looked at this premium feature recently, so I don’t know if it directly syncs over wifi, or requires a computer…)
So…. is there really a story here? Seems a lot like speculation and assumption.
