Node monitoring is that most BeOS-esque of system services that allows applications to offload the task of watching files and directories for changes. It provides the basis of “live” queries and folders, etc. Axel Dörfler (author of OpenBFS) has checked in a first version document for describing the kernel implementation of node monitoring for OpenBeOS.
One of the strengths of the OBOS project is that people can work on what they want, due to the very modular nature of BeOS. Marcus is working on the Media kit because he’s into Media. Try and say to him “go and work on the kernel’s internal messaging system” and that’s another good volunteer we’ve lost.
I love your link to a “promise”:
“As far as an alpha, it would all depend on what people are looking for. Anyone can download and build today. We encourage (and warn, since nothing is super well tested yet) that. As far as a completed, packaged alpha, I would not expect one for **AT LEAST** a few months. Probably more.”
That was, and still is, a very true statement. Not a hint of a promise of any release date. So, a few months was very unlikely, and ultimately didn’t happen, but certainly no promises were broken based on that link.
Now let’s celebrate the progress, no matter how small. A couple of days ago, OBOS was ranked at #84 for activity on sourceforge – very good for a project with fairly minority appeal atm. In the past couple of days some print server stuff got commited, parts of the app server were commited, and some media kit things too. Also, the kernel mailing list has seen much discussion on using BMessages in the kernel, with Axel implementing a solution now, AFAIK.
I don’t know how you can ask this team of volunteers to put in even more work than that.

I personaly have hope in OBOS because the spirit is in it. I’ve never seen a software project about which you can say “it will be ready in 10 months” and that comes to be true. I feel aware of that.
Occasional contributors have access to the OBOS source and can contribute when they want, all is public. They needn’t to be registered in any way. So go for it.

This is just not right and I won’t allow it to continue.
I don’t think you have any say on the matter, outside of what gets posted to this website.
Where’s this promise you talk about?
http://www.osnews.com/story.php?news_id=1013
As a native english speaker, let me point out that there are no promises on that page.
Having a free OpenBeOS in 5 or 10 years that can barely do what BeOS R5 could do 3 years ago, it is just not satisfactory. OpenBeOS was not created on those grounds. In 10 years the needs of the people will be different. BeOS will just be a toy, as today the free versions of CP/M or DR-DOS are. OpenBeOS does not have the luxury to “take its time”.
Who the **** are you to say what’s satisfactory when it comes to OBOS development? These developers are working as hard as they can to fulfill their own personal goals, not yours. They’re doing it because they want to. If you’re not happy with the finished product (whenever its’s released), don’t use it. You won’t be hurting anyones feelings.
But please get off your high horse.
You’re attitude would be the same as Michael Phipps using his role as lead of OBOS to proclaim how you singly handedly ruined BeNews and are doing the same to OSNews when, frankly, everyone is aware that you worked on both sites out of love for the topics, and that your goals with the sites are your own, no one elses.

Hello guys!
Write your critics about me. I like to much!
I’m a geek and BeOS fanatic. I’ve 18 years old. I’m from Brazil. I’m living in a small city called Terra Boa in Parana state. I have a full of time job. I study laws in a high school called Unipar (www.unipar.br). I’m a BUG-Br member (www.bug-br.org.br). You find me in IRC in brasnet server, #beos channel. I have a girlfried called Maila of 17 years old (I love you!!!). I’ve a K6-2 500mhz with 128RAM 10HD with Windows 98, Red Hat 7.3, FreeBSD 4.7 and BeOS 5, And, of course, I’m BlueEyedOS Webmaster.
My main language is PORTUGUESE, remember: I born in BRAZIL. I’m learning english since when I had 12 years old. But english teachers in Brazil is a joke, then I’m learning to much with you, around the world. I know, my english is very poor. But I don’t know american gramar, I don’t know australian gramar nor english gramar. Here in Brazil, english teachers teach only WORDS, not gramar. I write in english with portuguese gramar in mind, then something will be wrong. Many brazillian persons have learned english corretly travelling to USA or England and having contact with english or american people. I never travelled to out of Brazil (except to Paraguay hehe).
I’m a BlueEyedOS member since june-2002, I know a lot our project. I’m here to aswers your questions about BlueEyedOS project and read news too. Like webmaster, the website is my reponsability, but I commit my C++ code to our CVS too, then I know *ALL* about our project, not only about the website.
Then, my friends, If you *WANT* a webmaster that speak english correctly, pay me a travel to USA and get a job to me there
.
Lano: You’re from Germany, right? Try write or speak in portuguese to you see…
Anonymous: Thank you! You understand my difficulty!

Micheal,
Don’t take it too seriously when people here complain about your English. There are many people who post here with less than perfect English.
It is true that there are many bad teachers of MANY languages around the world. Many countries will hire native English speakers as teachers just because they are native English speakers and not because they know how to teach. There is more to being a good teacher than most people think.
My girlfriend was lucky to have a real Japanese teacher when she began to learn Japanese. The woman wasn’t just someone who could speak the language. My girlfriend works in a school helping people who speak English as a Second (or third or fourth) Language (ESL). If you came to visit the USA (east coast), maybe she could tutor you in English. She’s learning how to be a teacher. Or she could help you find a good teacher here.
She is teaching me French and Japanese. If you have learned this much English since you were 12, with only bad teachers, than you have done well. I should know. I am learning with good teachers who tell me I am good with language and I think it is very difficult to learn to speak another language!
As for your web site: I think there are many people who would help you with your English for free. Just ask!
