Maybe, but the nVidia drivers for Linux are much more mature AFAIK. They also support it since 2001. That’s why I suspect that they might be the target.
It isn’t. They mean MAJOR hardware manufacturer–read the article. Compared to HP, Nvidia is small change. They’re aiming high. It might be Dell or something of the kind.

I’m sorry if this is “off topic” or if I’m not “31337” or if I didn’t “RTFM” but today a terrible tragedy occurred. My husband committed suicide. And one of the reasons was he couldn’t find acceptance, in real life or online forums. In fact, he left a note hinting that these “OSOpinion” forums here may have pushed him over the edge. He submitted many postings here. Most replies were very disrespectful. Sometimes his postings were even deleted (“moderated”). It is terrible that an online community could push a man over the edge. I ask you all to think back on the kind of words you used when posting here.

I’ve read a couple of articles (can’t remember where) that this stems from work they did to port a Unix (don’t remember the name of it) on Itanium. Of course Intel had something to do with this so I bet its Intel.

I can’t name many companies that haven’t been mentioned during this crap. SCO needs to die, and die painfully, I hope everyone involved in the creation of SCOsource comes out of all this with negative bank accounts.
Its truely getting rediculous, I don’t see how anyone can buy a product from them, THEY might be next ones getting sued.
What I would love to see however, is SCOsource sueing the developers of SCO OpenServer for copyright infringments in SCO OpenUnix… THAT would be funny, I think that would officially put the iceing on the cake so to speak 8)
I can’t wait till these guys get smacked down hard and fast by IBM, Novell and others.
Assuming the above post is in fact true, I think that you also need mental help because:
A) You let your husband spiral down into a deep depression resulting in suicide.
B) You should be mourning, and taking care of arrangements, rather than coming here and blaming us.

Sontag says that removing the IP code will be difficult because of “derivative works”….how can a derivative work be based on kernel code? Something’s rotten in Denmark.
The facts, as opposed to inflammatory comments by SCO personnel, are not overly alarming.
1. All of SCO’s actions up until now have been saying things that have not been proven.
2. If you look very carefully, SCO has not actually said very much specific.
3. SCO has not said what they think the result of what little they have said will be (except their talk in relation to IBM).
4. SCO has not provided enough information for any one (other than IBM) to form a belief as to whether SCO has any claim at all.
IBM has made their position clear — no deal with SCO.
Also, a question: if the code is in Linux, everyone has already seen it. So, if SCO has a valid case, they would not be harmed by pointing out what code was allegedly copied. So why haven’t they done so?
And I don’t even use Linux.

Project Trillian killed project Monterey. HP founded project Trillian with support from Intel.
The SCO case against IBM formely relates to its contracts with IBM for project Monterey
A lot of the enterprise level stuff in the kernel came out of project Trillian. One of the companies supporting project Trilian as a full member was Caldera. Well SCO (formerly Caldera) can hardly sue itself.
This is yet another move to inflate its stock price, as one observer put it – we won’t see a case in court of SCO versus IBM but more likely the SEC and the DOJ versus SCO (If Daryl McBride sells any of his stock and stock options he could be in deep legal trouble)
The reporter doesn’t talk about the injunction sent to SCO in Germany and how they had to shut down their german website (with possible fines) because they couldn’t substantiate their allegations.
Also, he hasn’t obviously read the “OSI Position Paper on the SCO-vs.-IBM Complaint” by Eric Raymond, nor is there any mention of the fact that most people SCO asked to act as third party experts refused to have anything to do with some NDA-censored “evidence”.
The threat to sue any United Linux member is quite perplexing, to say the least.
All this matter is murky, tiresome and disgusting. I suggest that OSnews avoids publishing the rantings of McBride and his accomplices until SCO and IBM get their day in court, if it ever happens.
On a side note, I thought OSnews was moderated. Why hasn’t anyone spared us the degrading comments made by Karina and company ?
XBe, you are completely right! I would love to use BSD. However, it needs to get some improvements:
– FreeBSD needs ISA DMA workarounds. I need to use a special parameter like hint.ata.isa_dma.disabled=”1″ at boot to make things work correctly.
– FreeBSD needs a decent X distribution. When I move the pointer too quickly it starts lagging behind.
– FreeBSD needs plug’n’play. All my hardware was autodetected in NetBSD, including Flashcard reader, soundcard and IDE controller, not so in FreeBSD.
– Why not switch to NetBSD? It needs more software. It would be nice if I could install KDE 3.1 in NetBSD 1.6.1. Now I can only install KDE 3.0 on it, by borrowing lots of packages from 1.6.
– NetBSD also needs a better partitioner for the installer.
– NetBSD needs a decent X distribution. It often suddenly coredumps, leaving a dark purple textmode terminal behind, with the characters made almost unrecognisable. The latter also happens sometimes when quitting X the right way.
If one of the BSD’s gets fixed, I would like to use it, but for now I stay with Windows and Linux.
Because presumably both HP and Compaq have UNIX licenses (for HP-UX and Tru64), and both contributed significantly to Linux development.
They have realised IBM isn’t going to bite on this one, so they have to threaten somebody else, hoping they will cave because they absolutely cannot win if this goes to court.
Any infringing code (and we only have SCO’s ever-changing stories to interpret this claim by) will be removed from Linux within days if it exists (and due to the fact they released the Sys V code is tainted with illegally copied BSD code, they will be having an exceptionally difficult time proving anything here), which will destroy any possibility of collecting royalties on an ongoing basis.
I imagine that they have also just destroyed the future of the UNIX IP they supposedly hold so dear, since nobody in their right mind would ever again choose to base an OS on code tainted by SCO copyrights.
SCO will go down in history as the company that killed commercial UNIX, and if I was a SCO stockholder who believes the AT&T UNIX IP does have value, I would be thinking of making sure SCO management go behind bars for this.
Somebody/company must or we will keep on making noise everywhere!!! Or we will sue here, sue there.

You are giving them way too much credit. They are so entranced in their little dream world, where they crush linux and everyone rushes up to pay them money, that they don’t see anything else.
If you substitute “Microsoft” for every place you see “SCO”, the picture is very clear.
In the corrupt American system, one must always:
1. Ask “who benefits?”
2. Follow the money
If you both things, it gives an outsider a fighting chance to see what is going on.
In the case of SCO:
1. Microsoft benefits. SCO went from struggling Linux/UNIX vendor to second most-hated company on Earth with no possible business future in either Linux or UNIX. Considering they are merely the stooge for the most-hated company on Earth, it makes sense.
2. Only Microsoft has paid SCO for this “new” license. Yep, only one company and it just happens to be Microsoft.
Ballmore has even come out praising SCO’s efforts. And why is SCO targeting hardware makers… who just happen to be the #1 source of Microsoft Windows OS revenue?
So let us not be blinded into thinking SCO decided to commit suicide all on their very own. Big Daddy Ballmore is behind the SCO lawsuits… all the way.
These guys are covering themselves in case the judge hands them their butts next week in the IBM case. Their stock will fall like a rock, but then they’ll step in and say “Hold it fellas… that there IBM wasn’t even our biggest target. No, no, no! We’ve got loads of untapped litigation potential. Look at this, we own Unix, basically every operating system used today except Windows. Our stock is cheap! Buy, buy, buy!”

Sometimes I wonder if everyone could just “ban” or “boycott” any information coming from SCO until they show proof.

Even as a BSD user and not directly related to Linux I find this affair very annoying and it pisses me of. I have not knew what happened when USL tried to turn down BSD years ago but now with that Linux & SCO affair I now understand what happened, somewhat, to the BSD people.
Makes me sad, even.

When this is all over, SCO will license the movie rights to a major studio. When the movie flops, they sue the studio for unauthorized use of Unixware codebase.

SCO does have a plan here – it’s just not working out the way they expected it to. It’s possible that had they done this even a year ago things might’ve turned out differently, but too many companies have invested too much to for this to fly now.
SCO’s IP has been superceeded by Linux in almost every way. Unless they pull a magic legal rabbit out of their asses, SCO is worthless as a takeover object.

Scox is going bankrupt anyway:
– never one profitable year.
– alienated all partners and customers
– no viable business plan
– loses money and market share every year
– book value $0.67/share
– no competitive products
– appartently no case against ibm
– lawsuits drag on for years.
Add it up = no future.

As an OS enthusiast, I wouldn’t mind. But as a music composer/enthusiast, I don’t know. How is BSD with multimedia?
Having heard a tale once of two guys getting a truck load of a million AOL CDs and dumping them at the AOL HQ, perhaps we could do the same using Linux CDs on the SCO front lawn and ask them out of all the distros and the source code…where is the SCO code?
